Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) relies heavily on replication agents to publish content from the Author instance to the Publish instance. When these queues become blocked or stalled, content delivery stops, creating a critical bottleneck for content editors and site administrators.

As an Adobe Bronze Solution Partner, Associative understands the intricacies of the AEM infrastructure. Below is a guide to diagnosing and fixing common replication issues, followed by an overview of how our team can support your digital transformation.

Common Signs of Replication Failure

  • Content published on ‘Author’ does not appear on ‘Publish’.

  • The Replication Agent status shows “Blocked” or “Queue is full”.

  • The “Test Connection” feature on the replication agent fails.

Step-by-Step: Troubleshooting AEM Replication Queues

1. Check the Replication Agent Status Navigate to Tools > Replication > Agents on Author. Look for agents that are not green (idle) or are red (blocked). Click on the specific agent to view its queue.

2. Verify Connectivity (Test Connection) Inside the agent configuration, click “Test Connection”.

  • If it fails: The issue is likely network-related or a configuration error. Check the Transport URI, user credentials (usually the replication-receiver user), and firewall settings between Author and Publish instances.

  • If it succeeds but the queue is still blocked: The connection is good, but a specific content payload is likely causing the jam.

3. Analyze the Logs Logs are your best source of truth. Check the error.log and replication.log files.

  • Search for com.day.cq.replication.

  • Look for HTTP error codes. A 403 Forbidden often indicates a permission issue with the replication user. A 500 Internal Server Error usually implies an issue on the receiving (Publish) instance.

4. Clear or Force Retry the Queue If a specific item is blocking the queue (e.g., a large asset or corrupt node):

  • Force Retry: Sometimes a transient network glitch caused the fail.

  • Clear: If the item is not critical, you can clear the top item in the queue to unblock the rest of the content. Note: This deletes the replication event, so the content must be republished manually.

5. Review System Resources Sometimes replication queues stall due to low disk space or high memory consumption on the instance. Ensure your JVM heap size and disk space are sufficient.
